From Awareness to Action: Teaching Young People About Drug Dangers and Legal Risks

As we confront the pressing issue of substance abuse among young people, it’s crucial to recognize the unique role lawyers can play in educating our youth about the dangers of drugs.

Legal professionals possess invaluable insights into the legal consequences of drug use and can serve as powerful advocates for prevention.

As part of our ongoing commitment at Haldanes to this process, we’re proud to share that Partner Felix Ng, and Associate Joanne Lam and Brian Fung from our award-winning criminal defence team recently participated in the “Abide by the Law Legal Forum Series 2024: Project GATES,” jointly organized by The Law Society of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Police Force Kwai Tsing District, the Police Psychological Services Unit, and the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups.

This series of interactive sessions aims to educate secondary school students about drug-related crime and the legal proceedings that follow.

This marks the third time Felix and Joanne have engaged with this vital initiative, where they had the opportunity to speak to around 350 students from secondary 1, 2, 3, and 6 at Salesians of Don Bosco Ng Siu Mui Secondary School.

Joanne was then joined by Brian for a fourth round of talks, this time to students at the Shek Lei St. John’s Catholic Primary School.

When we engage young people in open discussions about drugs, we empower them to understand the risks, consequences, and the science behind addiction. A supportive setting encourages them to ask questions and share their thoughts, making the information more relatable and easier to absorb.

Lawyers, particularly those involved in criminal defense, can play an important role in this educational effort.

Their unique perspective on the legal consequences of drug use and possession can provide real-life context that resonates with young people. By sharing stories of how drug-related decisions have impacted individuals and families, lawyers can highlight the legal ramifications in a way that is engaging and thought-provoking.

By engaging in frank discussions with young people, they can help bridge the gap between legal knowledge and personal accountability, empowering teens to make informed choices and understand the broader implications of their actions.

In turn this helps young people develop critical thinking skills that allow them to make informed decisions when faced with peer pressure and helps promote resilience and self-esteem, which are vital in navigating the challenges they will encounter.

Ultimately, a well-informed individual is better prepared to make choices that lead to healthier and happier lives.

Together, let’s ensure a brighter, safer future for our youth!
