Vincent Law Wing-chung, chairman of Hong Kong’s Billiards Sports Council, announced on a radio program that a top-ten world ranked snooker player is interested in becoming a Hong Kong resident. This news follows the recent residency approvals for English snooker stars Judd Trump and Ronnie O’Sullivan through the Quality Migrant Admission Scheme (QMAS). Vincent Law noted that the growing interest from elite players reflects Hong Kong’s appeal as a vibrant international city.

Vincent Law highlighted the increase in international snooker events in Asia over the past decade, suggesting that this trend could lead to more top players considering residency in Hong Kong. He expressed optimism that this influx could help position Hong Kong as a “World Snooker Center,” fostering a stronger snooker culture in the region.

Additionally, Vincent Law hopes the government will ease restrictions preventing young people under 16, wearing school uniforms, from entering snooker rooms. He commented on O’Sullivan’s ambitious plan to open 20 snooker clubs in Hong Kong, acknowledging the challenges given the limited number of existing snooker halls. However, he remains positive that with greater exposure and supportive policies, such goals are attainable.

Hong Kong’s cinema landscape has taken another hit with the closure of the Golden Harvest GH V Walk branch in Nam Cheong, marking the eighth film theatre to shut down this year. The cinema, located in a shopping center in Sham Shui Po, ceased operations on Friday, and Golden Harvest has labeled the status as “suspended operations” on its official website and social media. This closure comes despite some local productions achieving box office success, highlighting ongoing challenges within the city’s film industry.

The GH V Walk was the second Golden Harvest cinema to close in 2024, leaving the chain with only seven operational branches. Although the cinema had scheduled screenings for local films like Last Song For You, checks revealed that no showings were listed beyond Thursday, leading to speculation about its closure. Users on social media noticed the absence of future screenings and expressed a mix of disappointment and expectation regarding the fate of local cinemas.

The trend of cinema closures in Hong Kong has been ongoing since April 2024, beginning with the President Theatre in Causeway Bay and including several others such as Golden Harvest’s GH Kai Tak and Cine-Art House in Kowloon City. With the increasing popularity of streaming services, many residents are pivoting away from traditional cinema experiences, leading to concerns about accessibility to films in the future. Comments from the public reflect a sentiment of resignation, with many noting the convenience of streaming as a significant factor in their viewing choices.
