(1) China’s Oscar Entry Deemed Ineligible by Film Academy, Too Late for a Replacement
(Photo Credit: “The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru”)
China’s entry for the Best International Feature at the Oscar, “The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru”, has recently been ruled ineligible. The ruling came as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirmed that the documentary did not meet the required language criteria under the rules of the Best International Film category, which specifies that a film must feature over 50 percent of its dialogue in a non-English language to be eligible. However, since this non-compliance issue was only identified after the 2 October submission deadline, China is unable to submit an alternative film for consideration.
Directed by Fang Li, “The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru” narrates the poignant story of a cargo ship seized by the Japanese Army during World War II. On 1 October 1942, while transporting British prisoners of war from Hong Kong to Japan, the ship was torpedoed by a U.S. submarine. Of the 1,212 prisoners of war aboard, 384 were rescued by Chinese fishermen, while 828 tragically perished, either drowning or being shot by Japanese soldiers during the chaos of the incident.
Despite this setback in the international feature category, “The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru” remains eligible for the Best Documentary Feature, and promotional efforts are ramping up for that recognition. The film will be showcased at the Asian World Film Festival on 18 November and will begin its qualifying run at the Laemmle Monica Film Center in Santa Monica on 22 November, where director Fang Li is expected to be present.

Over the last weekend in Hangzhou, a group of individuals took to the streets dressed in various cosplay outfits to celebrate the Halloween festivity, with one notable participant imitating the famous actress Fan Bingbing. This cosplayer, a boy in a striking black embroidered dress, drew a crowd as he mimicked Fan Bingbing’s glamorous red-carpet presence, waving and blowing kisses to onlookers who eagerly snapped photos.
However, the festive atmosphere was short-lived as the police intervened and escorted the cosplayer to the police vehicle. Many netizens captured the moment of “Fan Bingbing” being escorted away, with one onlooker adding a humorous remark by shouting “Remember to pay taxes!” This remark drew laughter and heightened the drama of the situation. Alongside the Fan Bingbing impersonator, other cosplayers, including characters like Buddha, Jesus, Batman, Deadpool, and Iron Barrel Zombie, were also removed by the authorities.
Chinese media reported that an internal notice from the Shanghai police explicitly prohibited all cosplay activities and Halloween makeup in downtown areas. The directive emphasized that verbal persuasion would be the first step, with coercive measures to follow if individuals did not comply. This crackdown on cosplay has stirred discussions about creative expression restrictions during festive occasions in China.

Local star Aaron Kwok recently added a dash of drama to a day at the races when he was turned away from the Shatin Racecourse for wearing a polo shirt instead of a formal suit jacket.
On 27 October, Kwok arrived in a fitted polo shirt to watch his horse compete as he was accompanied by his wife, Moka Fang, his manager, and close friend Sunny Wong. However, an unexpected incident unfolded when he was denied entry to the paddock. When his manager inquired about the denial of entry, a Jockey Club staff explained “He’s not in a suit.” The club’s guidelines specify that men must wear a suit jacket over a shirt, along with long trousers and closed-toe shoes.
Despite the initial setback, Kwok handled the situation with grace as the staff discussed the dress code. In the end, he was permitted entry without the need to wear a suit jacket. This light-hearted incident has prompted discussion among netizens about the relevance of dress codes today. With fashion norms constantly evolving, many are wondering if it is time for venues to rethink their policies to embrace a more relaxed and inclusive approach.

(12) Xiaomi’s SU7 Ultra Prototype Shatters Records as Fastest Four-Door Car at Nürburgring
Xiaomi’s latest automotive project, the SU7 Ultra prototype, has made headlines by completing a lap at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6 minutes and 46.874 seconds, surpassing the German creation Porsche Taycan Turbo GT’s record and becoming the fastest four-door car at the racecourse. Impressively, the SU7 achieved this feat despite losing power for 12 seconds during the run due to a temporary malfunction caused by the blockage of an internal sensor by roadside leaves.
Equipped with three electric motors that deliver a combined output of over 1,000 horsepower, the SU7 Ultra can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in under 2 seconds and reach a top speed of 217 mph. This positions it as the fastest and most powerful sedan globally, outpacing competitors like the US’ Lucid Air Sapphire and Tesla Model S Plaid.
While marketed as a road-legal vehicle, the prototype featured a stripped-down interior and roll cage for enhanced performance. Xiaomi has opened pre-orders for the SU7 Ultra at RMB¥800,000 (US$112,500), with the production model expected to differ in weight and features, potentially leading to lap times closer to those of the Taycan Turbo GT. This achievement marks a significant milestone in Xiaomi’s venture into the automotive industry.
