Hong Kong action star Donnie Yen has received the World Outstanding Chinese Award, celebrating his contributions to the film industry. The 61-year-old shared highlights from the award ceremony on social media on 8 September, in which Yen expressed gratitude for the award and his commitment to producing impactful films that showcase Chinese talent.
In addition to his cinematic achievements, Yen has founded the Y.E.N Charity Foundation to assist the elderly and those in need. He stated that the award will inspire him to create more meaningful work and collaborate with charitable organizations.
Yen also discussed his upcoming projects, including “Ip Man 5” “Flash Point: Resurgence” and “The Prosecutor” in which he will act, direct, and co-produce. He plans to work on several Hollywood films, including a spin-off of the “John Wick” series and an adaptation of the 1970s TV show “Kung Fu”.
Established in 2003, the World Outstanding Chinese Award was created by the World Chinese Business Investment Foundation to honor Chinese individuals who excel in diverse fields globally. In a recent vlog whilst in Venice, Zhang Ziyi, along with her work team, prepared traditional Chinese home-cooked as she shared a delightful cooking session where her hairstylist rolling dough into noodles and the photographer peeling cabbage and the makeup artist cooking the vegetables. This heartwarming cooking session allowed them to bond over familiar flavors while enjoying their time in the iconic city.

“The Alter Space” in London is hosting an exhibition to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the classic Hong Kong comic “Bruce Lee”, created by artist Up Kwan. The exhibit, which ended on 7 September, showcased original artworks from the 1970s to 2000s, marking a growing trend in preserving Hong Kong comics.
Featuring original pieces that highlight the evolution of the comic’s style, the exhibition illustrated how Bruce Lee transitioned from Japanese influences to develop its own unique identity with detailed illustrations and realistic coloring techniques. Some artworks were on display for the very first time.
Curator Bede Ngan expressed excitement about the cultural significance of Hong Kong comics, and invited audiences to explore this lesser-known aspect of arts and culture through the exhibition which offers a glimpse into the rich history of Hong Kong’s comic scene and its impact on local identity.

The 49th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) was launched on 5 September which featured the inaugural Chinese Film Market Screenings organized by the China Film Co-Production Corporation (CFCC). TIFF has been a leading global film festival since its inception in 1976 promoting film exchange and trade. A CFCC spokesperson expressed hope that the festival would introduce international audiences to the richness of Chinese cinema, serving as a vital link to the global market.
This event showcases five films: “Post Truth”, “Embrace Again”, “Love Never Ends”, “Endless Journey”, and “Viva La Vida”. The screenings aim to enhance cultural dialogue between Chinese and foreign filmmakers and support co-productions and copyright transactions.
Locally in the country, the Chinese film market continues to thrive, with production of 971 films in 2023 and a box office record of RMB 55 billion, making it the second-largest globally. A strong momentum has also been seen in 2024.

Haughey expressed that she is currently concentrating on her immediate goals rather than long-term commitments.

The world’s first physical store for “BLACKPINK The Game” has opened in Times Square in Hong Kong. Fellow “BLINKs” can visit the store until 2 January 2025, to find a variety of official merchandise, including exclusive collectibles.
The store features a striking black and pink design, complete with a captivating mural for fans to capture memories. Merchandise includes accessories, phone holders, and unique items like cushions and plush hammers. Located at Shop 710-712, Level 7, Times Square, the store is open daily from 11 am to 9 pm.
Available on major online app stores, “BLACKPINK The Game” allows players to step into the role of the group’s producers, solving puzzles and making key career decisions. The mobile game has received great success with 6 million downloads since its launch in 2023.
Since their debut in 2016, the four-member group – Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa—has achieved remarkable success, including being the highest-charting Korean female act on the US Billboard Hot 100 and setting records with their albums and concert tours.

Jet Li, the action superstar, has significantly reduced his film participation in recent years due to various health issues including heart problems, with his last movie being Disney’s live-action “Mulan” in 2020. Recently, it was announced that Jet will star in a live-action adaptation of the popular mainland comic “Biao Ren” alongside Wu Jing and Nicholas Tse, directed by Yuen Woo-ping.
“Biao Ren” is set in 607 AD during the harsh rule of the Sui Emperor Yang Guang, focusing on a skilled escort named Dao Ma who undertakes a perilous mission of an escort to the capital, Chang’an, unaware of the dangers and conspiracies that lie ahead.
According to reports, Wu Jing, who is also serving as a producer, will star as the main character “Dao Ma” a mysterious and unidentified bodyguard. The two other major roles, “Zhi Shi Lang” and “Shu” are expected to be played by Jet Li and Nicholas Tse, respectively. Fans are excited about Jet Li’s return to the martial arts genre, although there are concerns regarding his physical condition to handle the demanding action sequences.

(11) “KAWS:HOLIDAY” Marks 11th Stop in Shanghai for the Mid-Autumn Festival

“KAWS: HOLIDAY” has launched its 11th installation in Shanghai, featuring an illuminated sculpture of the iconic COMPANION figure embracing the moon. Located along the North Bund, the installation celebrates the Mid-Autumn Festival against the backdrop of the Huangpu River and Shanghai’s skyline.
This light sculpture is the first in the “KAWS: HOLIDAY” series and pays tribute to the tradition of lighting lanterns, symbolizing prosperity and good fortune. The project was created in collaboration with AllRightsReserved and JFJ Productions, led by singer-songwriter JJ Lin, who performed at the grand opening ceremony of the project.
Besides the epic sculpture, the installation is accompanied by exclusive collectibles, including a “KAWS: HOLIDAY” Shanghai Vinyl figure, a reflective hoodie, and a mooncake gift set. These items are available at the Shanghai pop-up store and online.
